The Cost of College in Arizona (2025–26)

Arizona has three public universities — Arizona State University (ASU), the University of Arizona (U of A), and Northern Arizona University (NAU). For Arizona residents, tuition is competitive nationally; the bigger swing is whether you pay resident, WUE, or full non-resident rates, and where you live while enrolled.

UniversityResident TuitionNon-Resident TuitionOn-Campus Room & Board
ASU (Tempe)~$11,822~$34,014~$15,500
University of Arizona~$11,835~$38,165~$16,746
NAU (Flagstaff)~$11,900~$26,800~$12,500

Figures are 2025–26 undergraduate base rates, before mandatory fees (roughly $1,200–$1,800/yr). Always confirm current rates with the university.

WUE: Arizona's Biggest Out-of-State Discount

The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) lets students from participating western states pay 150% of resident tuition rather than full non-resident tuition. At ASU or NAU that can cut $15,000–$20,000 a year off the sticker price. NAU and ASU offer WUE-style awards broadly; the University of Arizona uses comparable non-resident merit scholarships instead. Program slots and eligibility vary — apply early and confirm with admissions.

Establishing Arizona Residency

In-state tuition generally requires 12 continuous months of Arizona domicile immediately before the term, with evidence you're here for more than school — Arizona driver's license, voter registration, employment, vehicle registration. Dependent students usually inherit residency from a parent. The university's residency office makes the final call, and "domicile for tuition" is stricter than just living here.

Arizona Financial Aid & Scholarships

Sticker Price vs Net Price

The "cost of attendance" you see published is the sticker price. Your net price — sticker minus scholarships and grants — is what actually matters. Many Arizona students pay far less than sticker after merit aid and the Arizona Promise. This calculator shows both, plus the multi-year total so you can plan borrowing realistically.

Frequently Asked Questions — Arizona University Tuition

ASU base undergraduate tuition is about $11,822 for Arizona residents and about $34,014 for non-residents, before ~$1,400 in mandatory fees. With room, board, books and personal costs, total cost of attendance is roughly $30,000 (resident, on campus) to ~$55,000 (non-resident).
About $13,573 in-state and $39,903 out-of-state for tuition and fees. Room and board adds ~$16,746. Total cost of attendance on campus is about $35,369 in-state and $61,699 out-of-state.
The Western Undergraduate Exchange lets eligible students from western states pay 150% of resident tuition instead of full non-resident — often $15,000–$20,000/yr saved. NAU and ASU offer WUE-style rates; U of A uses comparable non-resident merit awards. Confirm eligibility with the school.
For residents, ASU, U of A, and NAU are similar (~$11,800–$13,600 tuition). NAU often has the lowest total cost thanks to cheaper room and board. For non-residents, NAU and ASU WUE rates are usually the most affordable.
Generally 12 continuous months of Arizona domicile before the term, with evidence you're here for more than school (AZ license, voter registration, employment). Dependent students usually take residency from a parent. The university's residency office decides.
The Arizona Promise Program covers tuition and mandatory fees not met by other gift aid for Pell-eligible Arizona residents at the three public universities. Arizona also offers the Teachers Academy and many merit scholarships. File the FAFSA early.
Both — the full sticker cost of attendance and, after subtracting the scholarships/grants you enter, your estimated net price, plus the total across your full degree.
Roughly $15,000–$17,000/yr on campus at ASU and U of A, and less at NAU. Living off campus or with family lowers this significantly — it's usually the second-largest cost after non-resident tuition.
Resident tuition has been stable — U of A has frozen in-state tuition for several years, while non-resident tuition typically rises ~3% a year. Use the years field to project a multi-year total and add a small buffer for increases.
It uses published 2025-26 figures and is a solid planning estimate, but actual costs vary by major, campus, credit load, and aid. Use each school's official Net Price Calculator for a personalized figure.
